Last day of October

I stayed up watching Super Size Me (I know I'm behind the times but really Netflix is a miracle gift for people like me in Queens where there are no video stores or movie theaters) last night. I also watched a bunch of the extra interviews in the end. I thought it was really well done and it reminds me of all the good reasons I don't go to any fast food joints.

Fall is flying by and it still seems like summer to me somehow. I went out running this morning in shorts and a t-shirt and just soaked it all in. Happy Halloween!

Fall foliage with the boys

I went up the Hudson for the weekend with Mun to visit Billy at his man-pad. It was raining all day Saturday so we didn't manage to do much but take turns napping on Billy's couch and making a huge dinner. On Sunday it was beautiful and we headed to Mohonk preserve in New Paltz for a hike. The leaves are starting to turn and the air smelled so wonderful.

Rylan came to visit- yay!

My friend Rylan came up to NY with his class from UGA for the weekend to look at art. I hung out with them on Friday while they checked out the New Menschel gallery and the paper negatives show at the Met, and the photo exhibits at MOMA. We even managed to pin down busy bee Joe for a drink in Chelsea.

Jaws

Damien Hirst's shark is now on view on the secod floor of the Modern Art galleries at the Met. And contrary to the photo above, the jaws on the one at the Met are wide open!

Alex Abajian's glass boats

Victoria posted photos of studio visits she did over the weekend in San Francisco. The photos of the glass boats caught my eye. Then I did a doubletake when I saw the name of the artist- Alexander Sarkis Abajian. I went to HS with Alex! I emailed Alex and confirmed that he was the one that I knew and I'm hoping to have a studion visit when I go to San Fran in two weeks!

Motherland

Motherland is a nicely published book of images from Russia, taken between 2004 and 2005 by British photographer Simon Roberts. There are some really nice landscapes, interiors and lots of twins!

Jacob Holdt's United States 1970-1975

Geoff recently purchased Jacob Holdt's photo book United States 1970-1975. It is an unbelievable book with images of American poverty that I have never seen before. You can see those images and his other projects on his website.

Below is an intro from his website:

Arriving in America with only $40 for a short visit, a young Dane, Jacob Holdt ended up staying over five years, hitchhiking more than 100,000 miles throughout the USA.

He sold blood plasma twice weekly to be able to buy film. He lived in more than 400 homes - from the poorest migrant workers to America's wealthiest families such as the Rockefellers. They not only gave him a hospitality and warmth, but their continuing friendship to this day.

He joined the Indian rebellion in Wounded Knee, followed criminals in the ghettos during muggings, sneaked inside to work in Southern slave camps and infiltrated secret Ku Klux Klan meetings as well as Republican presidential campaign headquarters.

Working with prisoners he saw two of his friends assassinated. By the time he returned to Denmark 12 of his friends had been murdered (in the years since so many of his friends have been murdered that he has completely lost count).

Back in Denmark he put together the photos he had taken into a multimedia show named American Pictures. His show instantly became enormously popular and with the help of several black American friends, it was shown in 14 countries in 7 languages between 1976-82.

The profit was used for humanitarian aid in support of the struggle against apartheid by donating schools and farm machinery to the countries and liberation groups bordering South Africa.

In 1982 the show moved to America, where Jacob Holdt has since presented it in more than 300 universities, city councils, churches, etc. The show has been updated constantly and one fourth of the pictures are now from the 90'es.

In his latest version from 1997 Holdt worked closely with leading educators, psychologists and workshop counselors throughout America and Europe in order to best incorporate universal themes of oppression.

As a result the show is now the ideal thought-provoking "warm up" for national and international conventions on peace, ethnic conflict, human rights, sociology etc.

Marshall

I dogsat Marshall, Randy's dog, this weekend. We went on long walks and two good runs. I miss having a dog sometimes, but you know, dogsitting is good enough for me. Lots of cuddling and fun but I get to return the animal when I'm done! I'm not ready to be a fulltime pet owner.

Cool Calm Pete

Who knew that cutie pie Pete Chung, who I've known since my HS days, would become hip hop star Cool Calm Pete? I'm hoping to catch him in action later this month at the Williamsburg Music Hall.

Yet another reunion

Yes we (ACA folks) had yet another reunion. This one was official though with ACA people from Florida coming up to host the event. It was fun and I'm told that it's every October. Rock it!

Columbus Day Weekend- OHNY

I did manage to hit a couple of the Open House New York spots on Saturday with my friend Anna, her husband Neil, and their awesome daughters Camille and Juiszelle.

Soldiers and Sailors monument at the head of Prospect Park. I had been once before when a friend had a show there. This time it was more crumbly in the interior but fun nonetheless.

The Girls were starving after our first tour so we decided to go for Junior's- my first visit even though I've had their cheesecake and used to live not too far away. Anna and I both had the Something Else Sandwich. Beef brisket sandwiched between potato pancakes served with gravy and apple sauce. It was completely yummy and absolutely filling. I ended up skipping dinner- very rare for me.

The Lives of Others

Meera suggested Leben der Anderen, Das (The Lives of Others) to me earlier this month. It won the Oscars for best foreign film this year. It is an amazing story set in 1984 East Germany about the secret police who spies on a writer and his actress girlfriend. Ulrich Muhe gives an amazing performance as the secret police who listens and is changed by what he secretly hears.

A travel quote

Traveling, you realize that differences are lost: each city takes to resembling all cities, places exchange their form, order, distances, a shapeless dust cloud invades the continents. Your atlas preserves the distances intact: the assortment of qualities which are like the letters in a name.

Open House New York

Coming up this Saturday and Sunday is Open House New York, when architectural sites that are generally not open to the public swing their doors open to visitors. It's super fun and interesting but beware of the long lines!

So sad, no music

My ipod has died. I think it's the battery. It's just over a year old, not under warranty anymore. I guess I'll have to pop by the apple store tonight to see what the issue is. So sad, I have no soundtrack while I'm walking through the park now.
