The Mrs.

Turns out my Mr. is a Mrs. She's been spotted with the baby. I hope I can be lucky enough to catch sight of the darling.

Park friend

So I have a little buddy from the park that I wanted to share with you. I saw him everyday after work last week and on Monday too, when he actually climbed out of a tree, walked past me, crossed the road, and then climbed into another tree. He was a no show yesterday though.

I love walking through the park. The sea lions still make me very happy when I get to see them.

I hope to see you at the Nymphoto opening tonight at Sasha Wolf (6-8pm). sashawolf.com

Jeep

Jeep Rona Chang

I saw the raccoon again last night in the park. It was so cute. He (she?) was in the same tree, his head was sticking out of a hole and his two paws were hanging out of it, just looking around. Amazing. I brought my camera with me today to see if I can get lucky again.

Meera

Meera Rona Chang

I saw a raccoon in Central Park yesterday on my way home. It was halfway up a tree, maybe about 10 ft. off the ground. It looked frightened with the crowd gathering. I left in case it got freaked out.

90 degrees F in NY today?!

Bird Congress

Bird Congress Rona Chang

Picked up my prints for the two Nymphoto shows. They look good (one is a brand spankin' new image that I'm very excited about), I'm having them matted. So glad it's coming together nicely, more on the shows soon.

(Blogger looks like it's cooperating today!)

Soft Eyes

Soft Eyes Rona Chang

I got a cold over the weekend and I thought I'd just ease out of it. Instead, I think I've dropped into a well. At least that's what my head feels like when I blow my nose too much. Hopefully, I'll snap out of it soon.

Brown, White

Brown, White Rona Chang

I watched The Killing Fields, a film about a NY Times reporter whose coverage of the Cambodian War wins him a Pulitzer prize for reporting while his assistant, Dith Pran, in Cambodia goes missing. I'm generally not drawn to war movies, too bloody, too sad, and usually too surreal. This has to be the best war movie I've ever seen. I'm a complete Law order junkie therefore a big fan of Sam Waterston, who plays Sidney Schanberg the NY Times reporter. Though the best acting in the movie came from Dr. Haing S. Ngor who portrayed Dith Pran with genuine insight and conviction. After the movie, I looked him up on the web and read about his life. A Cambodian who also suffered tragic losses during Pol Pot's reign, he was a refugee in the US, who eventually and incredulously lost his life to LA street gang members in 1996. So sad, but he did leave his Academy Award wining portrayal of Dith Pran for us to watch.

Ears

Ears Rona Chang

It's been a while since I've been to the movie theater. I'd like to go see Sin Nombre, a film that follows a Hondurian girl as she tries to cross the U.S. border. Maybe next week.

Neck

Neck Rona Chang

The April 6th issue of New York magazine has a great feature on Travel escapes- where people fantasize about going, the magazine's recommendations, and the best part, four people who have actually flown the coop. It could be that it's just a tad chillier than I like and that we've barely had heat in our apt., but I want to be amongst those who are out of the coop!

Espanol

One thing that's been on my mind is Spanish. Learning Spanish. I'm not sure why but I have an affinity for the language. Maybe it's because I grew up in Queens and you can hear it on the streets, stores and on the subway, along with a myriad of other languages. In middle school we had two languages to choose from: French and Spanish. I chose Spanish because it was practical and familiar and French never made much sense to me. I took it in HS and for a semester in college. During the Peru trip, I spent two weeks studying Spanish in Arequipa. Much of it was a review and my head swirled at night when I had homework. Now that I am back home, I miss hearing the quantity of Spanish I did in Peru. I've been looking into soap operas to rent, rosetta stone, and thinking hard about going south of the border and really investing more time to learning Spanish.

(And while Alpacas have nothing to do with learning Spanish, they are really funny looking animals.)

Peruvian Hairless

Peruvian Hairless Rona Chang

I'm headed down to Peru today and I'll be back in March. I've scheduled a post a week from my last trip there. I will take lots of new photos and share upon my return. The Peruvian Hairless is actually a breed of dogs. I saw some when visiting the tombs in the north and they really fit in with the desert landscape. They remind me of a dog my Dad had named Lady.

Dreaming of a German Shepherd

I had a dream about owning a German Shepherd. It's the kind of dog I want to have one day. I decided I need to spend more time on my ongoing series, Inventory of Mortality, a series that is based on my relationship with my father. I am slowly building images into this series. The work will be very different from my other landscape based work. I spent two days working on the images below, I think they will be a diptych.

A case of mistaken identity

I'm embarrassed to admit that I've been wrongly identifying the sea lions at the Central Park Zoo as seals. They are my favorite part too, since I get to walk by them on my way into work every morning. I figured this out when I read about the sea lions at Pier 39 in San Francisco. This free "attraction" was by far my favorite part of my trip to SF. I spent a couple of hours just listening to them talk noisily to each other, barking, playing, pushing each other around, and swimming. They are fascinating. And best of all, these sea lions were there because they liked it there. They are free to come and go as they please so the numbers fluctuate- there were about 200 there that day. Their world is so big, they must see so many great sights. It's a MUST DO if you visit San Francisco. I even called my sister and left her a happy birthday voicemail so she could enjoy them too.

Gone to the fair!

The NJ State fair at the Sussex County fairgrounds rocks! The lobster roll guy from Maine didn't show- I was really looking forward to it, being the only non super fried food at the whole event. We went on Saturday afternoon. I had a corn dog. I eat a hot dog once maybe two, three years, maybe. But I have a weakness for corndogs- thank goodness they are not so common. In Taiwan, when we were growing up, my cousins, sister, and me would go to the top two floors of the mall near my uncle's place and entertain ourselves by playing arcade games, bumper cars, and eating corn dogs. The hotdogs in Taiwan are skinnier, pinker, sweeter and not so salty. I don't think they are any better for you but the corndogs there are so yummy. I give in to them sometimes when I stroll through the night markets.

We checked out the pie eating contest in the 3-6 year old category. The boys were amazing, especially Ryan, the little boy who won. He stuck his face in the pie and used his teeth to get at the crust. The boy next to him was amazed.

We only had enough tme to check out the chickens and rabbits. The breeds were so interesting. This is the best part of the fair for me. I was sorry to have missed the alpacas and the other animals. Daphne, I wish you were here to see all of the rabbits! There were so many and they were so cute and amazing looking!

Then there was the pig race which was too quick but amusing enough.

The greenhouse was a bit disappointing. It could be that the stuff had been sitting there for a week already. For more pictures, check out my Flickr photos.

flurry of sightings

Last night, as Geoff was sitting on the back porch watching the rain in Pond Eddy, a little baby skunk rubbed against his leg. He went inside and came back out with some cat food for it. This morning inside the house there was some commotion in the computer room with Boom Boom and Ray. Geoff checked in on them and found them with a baby bat. He caught it and released it outside. On the way to the vet at Port Jervis (Boom Boom got a check up) he saw a bald eagle in the sky. On the way back, he saw a baby snapping turtle crossing the road. He picked it up and rescued it. He brought it back to Pond Eddy and released it in a pond. He spotted a snake by the pond. As he approached the driveway, he saw a Mama bear with two cubs. They ran up the hill when they spotted him. And I missed it all.
